Film discussion with director Mohamed Rashad at all screenings
A stroke of luck of a film about a world where happiness is rare ― and yet it happens.
Hossam, 23, starts his new job at a factory in Alexandria where his father died in an accident a month ago. The job was offered to the family as compensation to secure their livelihood. It is now up to him to provide for his disabled mother and his 12-year-old brother Maro. Maro insists on accompanying him to the factory. At his mother's request, Hossam takes the boy with him, causing Maro to give up his schooling and plunge into the harsh reality of child labour. At the factory, they meet other workers, including Mostafa, who is partly responsible for their father's death. The colleagues respected their late father, but treat the brothers with suspicion, fearing that the two might seek revenge for their father. Hossam does everything he can to improve relations with the workers and avoid conflict. But then another tragic accident occurs, and the life he has worked so hard to build slips through Hossam's fingers.
‘One of those modest films that is easy to overlook, but which is worth diving into, a world where happiness is rare and the pride in the younger brother's eyes is the ultimate reward.’ (cineuropa)
